MTN Ghana Marks 30 Years of Service

MTN Ghana says it now contributes approximately 6% of Ghana’s total tax revenue, as the telecommunications company celebrates its 30th anniversary. The disclosure comes as the company positions itself not only as Ghana’s largest mobile network operator but also as one of the country’s biggest corporate taxpayers.
The company’s Chief Internal Audit and Forensic Officer, Michael Gbewonyo, said MTN’s three decades of growth have been driven by the trust and support of customers, regulators, business partners, employees and the media.
MTN’s operations have become deeply embedded in Ghana’s economic development, with millions of customers relying on its mobile, data and digital financial services every day. Gbewonyo noted that the company’s contribution now extends well beyond telecommunications, with tax payments representing a significant portion of the country’s total tax revenue.
They continue to invest heavily in expanding network coverage and digital infrastructure while supporting Ghana’s ambition to build a more inclusive digital economy, such as through digital platforms.
Reflecting on the country’s communications evolution over the past three decades, Gbewonyo noted that services once considered expensive luxuries have become essential tools for everyday life. Businesses now conduct virtual meetings with ease, traders instantly confirm Mobile Money transactions, and students access educational resources online—developments made possible by advances in telecommunications infrastructure.
